Phonics & Sight Words Go Together Like Peanut Butter & Jelly

I was just home (St. Augustine, Florida) visiting the kids and grandkids for Carnival break.  I got to work on reading with three of my grandchildren.  What fun! One of my grandsons is in 1st grade and I proclaimed him the Sounder-Outer King of St. Augustine.  He can sound out any word.  He understands phonics because of the intensive work that his mom has done with him.  He loves books.  He loves to be read to and has a great attention span, but he wasn’t enjoying reading out loud AT ALL.  We read together and I realized that he was sounding out every word–even words he’d read before in the same story.  He needed a big dose of sight words to turn his reading around. So we downloaded Dolch sight words and made up games to learn them.  We had the primer and pre-primer words down in a day or two.  He also worked on sight words using some online sites that I found.  Before we knew it he was reading like a champ.  His parents couldn’t believe the difference.

Phonics + Sight Words = Reading Success

Just a quick note:  my other grandchildren are younger (3 & 5).  We couldn’t tear them away from Starfall, which is a great phonics and early reading site.  I highly recommend it.

Happy Reading!
